1st grade Lesson 15............Review of our brain lessons

We talked about flipping our lids:

All the parts of my brain are connected and working together. It is almost like the upper part of my brain is hugging my amygdala and it feels safe; my pre-frontal cortex is doing it’s job and being in charge! I am in control!

My amygdala doesn’t  feel safe any longer and my pre-frontal cortex isn’t in charge.  I can easily ‘flip my lid’ and my emotions may get really big. I am not in control!

Review questions and answers:

1.) Where do my memories live? ~ Hippocampus

2.)  Where do my feelings live? ~ Amygdala

3.)  What helps make connections in my brain? ~ Neurons

4.)  What does the RAS stand for? ~ Reticular Activating System
What does it do? ~ It helps my brain allow all the things I need to do my job and focus to get through and tries to block the things that distract me or stop me from doing my best work

5.) Who is in charge of my brain? ~ I am!

6.)  Where is the BOSS of my brain? ~ The Prefrontal Cortex
What is it’s job? ~ It works with the rest of my brain to help me make good choices, solve problems and is the thinking part of my brain

7.) What are some ideas I can use to calm my body and brain? ~ take deep breaths, count to 10, do some yoga, ask for a break

8.)  Which part of my brain sometimes likes to try to take control? ~Amygdala

9.) Is there a connection between how fast or slow I am breathing and my brain? ~ Yes Explain. ~ if I am ready to learn and feeling calm(breathing and heartbeat will be normal), my body and brain are working together to help me make good decisions; if I am feeling worried and angry(breathing and heartbeat may be fast), my body and brain may not be working together to help me make good decisions.

10.)  What are the axon and dendrites job in my brain? ~ the axons drive or deliver messages between neurons; the dendrites catch or receive the messages.

11.) Can smells and tastes affect my brain? ~ Yes.

12.)  What does it mean to be reflective? ~ to stop and take a break; reset my brain.

Germ experiment...........

I did an experiment to help show the kids how quickly germs can spread from our hands to other items........and why it is so very important ...
