I like to end my first round of class lessons for our 2nd grade students with goals. This allows us to culminate all of the materials we've worked on together, as well as prepare their minds for my next set of visits, which will be on Jobs and Careers.
This year I got the idea to try SMART goals with the students. This endeavor has gone really well and I am so glad I tried it! First, we discuss why we need to have goals and such. Then we view this video:
We then work on defining each section together for what SMART stands for:
S = Specific
M = Measurable
A = Attainable or Achievable
R = Relevant or Rewarding
T = Timely
T = Timely
We then take each section and write our goals together, one at a time:
S = What do you want to accomplish?
M = How will you know when you have accomplished your goal?
A = How can the goal be accomplished?
R = Is this goal worth working hard to accomplish? Explain.
T = By when will the goal be accomplished?
If your child hasn't shared their goal with you yet, please ask them to do so. Some of the students wrote immediate goals such as working out more, getting better at reading, being able to make a 3 point shot in basketball, etc. Others chose to apply a more long-term approach to their goal to what they want to do when they grow up.
