Our class lesson this week for 2nd grade is about being respectful and responsible with our words and actions.
We started out with a nice, wrinkle-free heart and then together shared ideas on how we could hurt others. As the students shared their ideas of how we can hurt others with our words, bodies or actions, I wrinkled the heart. We then tried to flatten out the wrinkles by saying we were sorry or we were just kidding ~ it didn't work. Each student then placed a 'band-aid' on the heart while saying "I am sorry; I won't do it again; I didn't mean it or Please forgive me"
We discussed together that even though we say these things and place a 'band-aid' on it, it doesn't always take the wrinkles away from our hearts. When I asked the students what they learned, one student (Brogan) shared the following thought: "Use your mind before your words!" and another (Cailor) said "Think before you speak!" and yet another (Nora) said "You wanted us to know what it might feel like if we hurt someone" . . . I couldn't have summed it up any better than that!!!
