In preparation for Vehicle Day and Career Week, I am visiting the classrooms and talking about jobs, careers and community helpers with all K-2 students.
One of the 2nd grade students shared the following statement during a lesson: "Ms. Mazzella, I think you are teaching us this to try and prepare us for our lives." I responded, "Oh yes, my friend, you are absolutely correct! Everyday, every adult in this building is trying to prepare you for your lives!" ~ they never cease to amaze me!!!

~ A job is something you have or do to earn money for the things we need (food, shelter and clothing).
~ A career is a job you do over a long period of time.
~ We set goals in order to continue learning what we like and may enjoy doing in the future.

(planning for college)
and enjoyed this book together:
~ We have talked about the fact that many of the jobs they will have when they grow up may not even exist now. For instance, I gave them the example of how in 1986, the job of creating a sleek, small cell/smartphone wasn't available. I shared that there were 'car phones' but they weren't sleek or small!
*We are also discussing why we need to talk about jobs, careers and college right now, in 1st and 2nd grade!!
