I was working with a student this morning because he needed to apologize for talking back or yelling at an adult ~ he made the statement to me, "I'm not used to having to give an apology" after we talked about the steps he needed to follow as a consequence . . . it dawned on me that I often practice "I statements" with students I work with in my office, but others may need practice with that, as well as making apologies.
So here are some ideas to spur conversations at home in the area of "I statements" and making an apology:
"I don't like when you_____________________________,
(say mean things to me)
because __________________________.
(it hurts my feelings)
I need you to _________________________."
(stop saying those things and be nice to me)
