1. Give PRAISE and ENCOURAGEMENT openly and without reservation
2. BE CONSISTENT with discipline
3. Use MEDIA such as movies, CDs and television shows as conversation starters
4. Involve your child as much as possible in making FAMILY RULES and decisions
5. Be a good ROLE MODEL for your child
6. READ TO YOUR CHILD every day or let them read to you
7. Discuss your FAMILY's VALUES and why you have them
8. TALK with your child about risky behaviors . . . Be open, honest and approachable
